IMAGINE AN ART RESIDENCY IN YOUR SCHOOL WHERE EVERY STUDENT GETS THE FULL EXPERIENCE, AND EVERY STUDENT TURNS THEIR OWN IDEA INTO A UNIQUE ANIMATION

This is what we do!  In a series of workshops, we lead students through the design process. They are the designers. They brainstorm ideas , write a story, create their artwork, record their audio, and then produce their movie.  They learn how basic mathematics plays a role in translating a single frame/drawing into a unique movie.  The theme of their movies can range from short autobiographical stories, how-to guides, poem illustrations, science, and history topics. Their movies teach what they know, share ideas, process emotions, and tell stories.

This program excels at creating a social-emotional learning environment with many opportunities for student collaboration.  The program has been successfully implemented in both in-person as well as in virtual class settings. It can be offered in a multiage classroom setting as well as ESL/bilingual classrooms.

We teach students to be contributors not just consumers of digital information
.

  • HAVE AN IDEA TO SHARE?

It all begins with one idea. We all have ideas and we encourage students to listen and give their ideas power. They learn how to brainstorm and capture their ideas and then expanding them into more ideas and supporting details. These ideas inspire the story that will become their moving animation .

  • EXPANDING AN IDEA INTO A STORY.

We walk through the design process one step at a time. We show them how to plan and organize their idea into something exciting. Teachers know students are learning executive functions and expanding their literacy skills — while students just think they are playing with art making and having fun with technology. Students are always surprised that math plays a key role in their animation.

  • BRING AN IDEA TO LIFE

This is the most exciting part! Once they start the ball rolling they cant wait to bring their story to life. They have captured their idea, and created artowrk. Now they can animate it to tell a story, share an interest or teach and report on something they know. All the planning steps we did together becomes their map. In pairs or small groups they create each student’s movie. In the process of making the students collaborate and learn to communicate in new ways.

“I love how the students are working together to discuss their animation plans. It is great to hear them share all their ideas and collaborate. ”

  • Tracy Fox founded Memory Vessel Studios stop motion residency with the idea that she could give every student the same art experience. Its the experience of being "picked" to participate in her program. Instead of asking for only a couple volunteers to try out the steps as she taught she empowered each and every one of them. "Do you all want to learn how I write design record and make a movie out of an idea?' With a resounding cheer they all join in on her newly formed design thinktank.

  • Inclusion doesnt mean the same message is delivered each time. She doesnt expects them to all get to each benchmark on the plan in the same way. She has several approaches to the material to allow for the flexibility to be baked in for all. This ability to adjust the message is what has allowed her to see shy students come out of their shell with insightful and unexpected stories, students who are usually low motivation to surprise teachers with descriptive sentences that create poetic images -- bilingual students to gain confidence to communicate freely and proudly in either language to promote the goal of communication and confidence building, ( usually she picks up a few new words as well -- this makes her "sonrias" muy grande!) and sand of course she sees the naturally creative thinkers find new ways to layer additional expression into their stories.

Schools invite her back year after year to empower their students to be contributors not just consumers of tech learning creative communication skills that can turn into presentations and expression of their ideas in the future long after the workshops steps are complete.

  • As a life long artistic thinker, maker and teacher there was no surprise that Tracy volunteered for almost a decade as a cultural arts liaison for her childrens school, researching and suggesting robust creative programs. She knew that there would be students who would not be able to try these things any other way.

Now that she is on the teaching side of the contract she takes the investment in her goal just as seriously. She goes above and beyond to make sure that the dollars spent on her programs are providing an opportunity that could change how a child sees themself and their creative voice.

    Her mission was to

wanted to spark an art making conversation that put tech tools in the hands of students to hear what they had to say. She never tires of what their creative animation share and the collaboration of ideas!!! •
