STOP-MOTION

A film technique where you take one picture at a time of an object(s) in different positions - that when played together gives the appearance of movement.

STOP MOTION RESIDENCY This series of in person workshops create an environment where student work with digital tools, supplied by the teaching artists, allowing them to explore and expand their age-appropriate reporting, storytelling and language art literacy skills.  Using a theme, the students will turn informational essays, short stories or personal poems into moving animations.  Students are often surprised how math plays a role in this digital art-making challenge. STEM turns into a STEAM experience for all students who, regardless of their artistic confidence, learn to create movement with drawn elements and found objects.

During the design process, student will collaborate in pairs or small groups. They will be encouraged to use creative thinking and problem-solving skills. Understanding the basic mathematics behind translating a single frame/drawing into a unique animation, they will plan and illustrate their topic into a visual outline/storyboard.  Becoming the Creative Directors of their projects, they create the animation “characters” and learn animation techniques to bring their words to life.

This workshop promotes communication and partnership skills important to character education goals. Animation topics have ranged from creative writing, social studies and science unit topics and character education. The program turns children into teachers and role models, immersing them in the creative process where they often don’t realize they are learning organizational skills.    A culminating animation showcase will celebrate the students’ work at the end of the series.  This can take many forms and can be determined based on the goals of the school.  Each classroom could have its own showcase – or the entire grade level could assemble to watch all the animations created.    Animations could also be set to run during a science fair or art exhibition.   An archive of the class or grade’s movies will be provided to the school at the end of the workshops.

Technology tools and equipment provided to use during the residency include iPads, stop motion and recording apps, and lighting as needed.  The teaching artist will provide art materials and handouts.    Access to the school Wi-Fi will generally be necessary.  School/classrooms provide scissors & colored pencils for students to use.

*Students will be expected to treat the artist technology with the same respect as their school-provided technology.
